The Minneapolis & St. Louis Railway

A PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY

We were provided with some amazing black and white photos for this book. To bring the cover photo to life, the unpainted metal parts of the train as well as the map overlaid at the top were printed with a heavy coat of metallic ink. The rest of the book cover has a light undercoating of silver with heavy black overprinting. As such, the train pops off in an interesting way—being much more metallic than the background.

Proficient treatment of the captions and text design gave the book’s design a nostalgic but inviting feel. On the jacket design for the hardcover version of this book, we used a unique text treatment on the jacket fore-edge (see image below).
